Unless DARPA unleashes 'Super Soldier AI robots' by the hundreds of thousands,

unless they are used early enough in the War,

Should this War remain a conventional one, (I doubt it) it will drag on for decades.
Should it come to nuclear warheads exchange (most likely scenario). It will be of Biblical proportions. Either way:

Currently, there are 5 possible triggers to WW3:
North Korea
Syria
The Eastern front (Ukraine, etc...)
China Sea dominance
Iran
In either cases, 4 of the 5 listed, are not stand alone.
North Korea is not the instigator of it's actions, China is. China is waiting to trap the forces assembled in North Korea, to deliver a fatal blow to the actors. China is not the only nation who will enter this Area of Operation. Russia, bound by a treaty, and as, now, an enemy of the USA, will back China.
Syria, is now facing the end of it's fight against ISIS, and is about to become a spoil of War. US, Russia, Turkey, the Kurds, Israel, Iran, have all claims to those spoils of War.
The Eastern front (as it was in WWII), is a spark that has failed to ignite so far, but has very good potential. Russia, US, the ideologically divided nations of Europe, are the main actors in this area. A reminder, Russia and China are allies by treaty, for better or worse.
Iran will eventually, become an other North Korea, Israel will make sure of it. Iran is supported by Russia, and more than likely have had nuclear war heads delivered, some say North Korea, supplied the missiles. (I don't believe it one bit. Russia outright supplied them.)
The larger question, even though not necessary regarding the outcome, who of the nations of the World, will side with whom, on what continent?

The Syrian Civil War has been waged since 2011 between multiple opposition (anti-government) groupings and the government as well, as their local and foreign support bases. Since 2014, a significant part of Syria′s territory had been claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, an entity internationally recognized as terrorist.
In August 2015, Russia began to send Russian-operated warplanes, T-90 tanks and artillery, as well as combat troops to an airbase near the port city of Latakia in Syria. On 26 August 2015, a treaty was signed between Russia and Syria that stipulated terms and conditions of use by Russia of Syria's Hmeimim airport, free of charge and with no time limit. The treaty, ratified by Russia′s parliament in October 2016, grants Russia′s personnel and their family members jurisdictional immunity and other privileges as envisaged by Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
By late February 2016, the Russian airstrikes conducted around 60 airstrikes daily, while the American-led coalition averaged seven. These Russian airstrikes have proven particularly effective against ISIS oil trade and supply routes in the Syrian Desert. An estimated 209 Syrian oil facilities were destroyed by the airstrikes, along with 2,000 petroleum transport equipment. By the time of the ordered withdrawal of the "main part" of its forces in mid-March, Russia had conducted over 9,000 airstrikes over the course of five and a half months, while helping the Syrian Army capture 400 towns and acquire 10,000 square kilometers of territory.

Rand Paul reminded the president via Twitter that he once opposed the Obama administration’s intention to strike Syria in 2013, and also that Trump said at the time that any such action would require congressional authority.
“This marks the fourth recent U.S. attack on Syrian government forces as they engage ISIS in attempt to eject the terrorists from eastern Syria,” Ron Paul continued. “Each time, U.S. intervention has benefited ISIS.”
