Excellent secular viewpoint! Is it backed by prophecy, and is there a spiritual element? For one, backtrack 4,300 years ago and Jesus's word. 'You do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but with principalities of the air'. Jubilees 10 tells us that 1/10 of the fallen ones were allowed to remain in the world under the supervision of Satan.
Who is Gog, but a principality that has been unravelling the deception for centuries (a very real influencer of nations).
'Magog, Gomer and his troops'. A little genealogy and ancient migrations are necessary. After Babel, the sons of Noah migrated throughout the earth. Japheth's sons Magog; Gomer; and their sons, migrated to Northern Europe, East and West. One of the sons of Gomer, is Ashkinaz (a prominent group that adopted Judaism, but are not ethnic Jews). Source of migrations book of Jasher chap. 10.
The descendants of Japheth, from Europe to the East and Asia, did observe the same religious traditions than the descendants of Shem. In Asia it was replaced by Buddhism; Taoism; and Confucianism, coincidence, just about when Jesus was born. In European nations, some already had adopted Paganism.
What prophecy wasn't fulfilled in 1948, and hasn't been fulfilled yet, but was used for deception? Isaiah 11 (the regathering).
What prophecy unravelled in 1948? Ezekiel 38 ('The Evil Plan' of Gog), not quite yet over. But what will follow is Zechariah 14. (The Day of the Lord)
What of Revelation 20 you say? Gog and Magog occurs twice. Satan and his accolytes will be bound for a 1,000 years, but they will be released in order to deceive the nations that will dislike Christ's Reign on earth in the near future. Yes, again Gog will entice Magog for a final war once more, before Judgement day.
