A Better Understanding of This Generation in Matthew 24:34

In this video, Peter is joined by Dr. Ryan Meyer from Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary, author of “This Generation in Matthew 24:34 and The New Exodus” (2025). How should we understand the phrase, “this generation will not pass away until all these things take place”? Dr. Meyer walks us through the important backdrop of the word “generation” (γενεά), and how Matthew appeals to the Old Testament context. Enjoy this fascinating conversation!

We use the word ‘this‘ to point out a person or object which is close to you. On the other hand, ‘that‘ is used to point out a person or an object which is farther from you.
The Greek is ambiguous for those pronouns.

Matthew 24

Jesus answered two Questions.
1 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple.
2 And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”
The temple was destroyed in 70 AD. It's destruction is a confirmation of his prophecy.
3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
The Essenes call our age the age of Grace.

4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.
5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.
6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Everything described has happenned and is still hapening today even the prospect of 3rd World war that may go nuclear. If not nuclear, the weapons of today are so much more destructive.
Verses 9-14 Persecution of Christians (this part has already occured but is not finished) and the Gospel preached in all the nations (One could say that the Gospel is preached more widely in our days, but not in all the nations)
...
21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
Now we get to a humanity extinction level. Something that never happened in history. And no, time is not shortened, but the days will be shortened to prevent mankind's extinction.
So what is the last sign before Jesus Christ appears? Fantastic events that never occured in the whole world at once (since Jesus is speaking to humanity):

...
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

The continuation of Matthew 24 is Revelation 20. Satan bound; Christ's Kingdom and rule on earth; Gog and Maggog or 'Satan's little season'; Judgement Day. (in that order)
